His bedroom is in a corner of the lounge room dominated by shelves of various objects. He is a hoarder and as a result of this his house is more of a storage shelter than a home. Prologue : Three Houses and a Home The first house is owned by an old man who collects items of interest. It becomes apparent that the narrators are unreliable, not only in terms of controlling the information the reader is allowed access to within the narrative but also because of spatiotemporal ambiguity within the narratives.
The analysis is divided into four chapters as follows: how to read the unnatural in a narrative, what constitutes an unnatural space, the respective narrator’s voice, and finally, reliability of the narrators within their unnatural space. By using a combination of the fairly recent sub-discipline within narratology, unnatural narrative theory, and Genette’s question of “who speaks?”, this study analyses the narrators and the different kinds of unnatural spaces in which they speak. This paper compares the unnatural aspects of Gulliver’s Travels and select City Watch instalments of Discworld. The narratives foreground the fantastic, written to entertain and amuse its readers but also contain societal criticism in the form of satire or parody. Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels set in Ankh-Morpork are similar enough that both can be treated as belonging to the subgenre of comic fantasy.

While Death may claim that “THERE IS NO JUSTICE. I argue that Death’s actions in their various skirmishes demonstrate that the only way to do justice to the group is by fairly treating the individual to care for the individual in the way he does is to enable justice to occur. Death thus becomes the unexpected champion of humanity and individuality, explicitly committed to the importance of care. This position is echoed by Death in his battle with the Auditors he knows that humans are inherently individual and this cannot be stifled without destroying humanity. While traditionally there is a push towards universalization in ethics, recently many have come to believe that our ethical thinking must recognize the embodied and individual nature of humans. One place this tension emerges is in ethical theorizing.
This illustrates a more general tension between the individual and the collective. Death, on the other hand, is rather fascinated by humans and sees value in the individuality humans exhibit. These beings strive to maintain order in the universe and dislike humanity and all its inherent messiness. In Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, there is an ongoing battle between Death and a group of beings known as the Auditors.
